Also known asEuropean Organization for Nuclear Research
CERN is the European Organization for Nuclear Research, the large physics laboratory based in Geneva.
For anyone working in digital it matters for another reason: there Tim Berners-Lee wrote the World Wide Web, which is why the site's articles recall that the roots of the history of the internet and of digital are in Europe, and precisely at CERN in Geneva.
The first web page, written by Berners-Lee and published in 1991, is still live at its original address, info.cern.ch. The point to remember is that the web (the pages linked to one another) and the internet (the physical network that carries them) are two distinct things: the web was born in a European laboratory, on top of a network that already existed.
An example
Anyone who wants to show a client what the early web looked like can open info.cern.ch: the first page in the history of the web is still there, at its original address.
