Nabaztag

Channels and tools

The Nabaztag is a plastic rabbit connected to the internet over wi-fi, able to light up, move its ears and speak, which received news, messages and updates from RSS feeds (the streams that announce a website's new content).

It is a European, French invention: it was conceived by Rafi Haladjian and Olivier Mével, who founded the company Violet in Paris in 2003, and went on sale in 2005. The name comes from the Armenian nabastag, ‘hare’, a nod to Haladjian's Armenian roots. It was one of the very first Internet of Things objects aimed at the general public, and a true forerunner: the idea of an always-on household object that listens, speaks and puts the network's information at a person's service is the same idea that smart speakers (such as Alexa and others) brought to mass success a decade later. Whoever bought one was an early adopter, one of the first to take up a technology before it becomes common.
