Binaural beats

Persuasion

Binaural beats arise when two tones of slightly different frequency reach the two ears separately, usually through headphones.

The brain perceives a third sound, a beat equal to the difference between the two frequencies. The phenomenon was discovered in 1839 by the German physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove, and brought back to attention in 1973 by the biophysicist Gerald Oster in an article in Scientific American. Some theories hold that the beat can steer brain waves towards states such as relaxation or concentration; the scientific evidence is still mixed, which is why the subject calls for caution when it enters a product's communication.

An example

A 200 hertz tone in the left ear and a 210 hertz tone in the right produce a perceived beat of 10 hertz.
