Subject areaProcess and organisation
A business unit is a division of a company with its own products, customers and accounts, led by a manager accountable for its revenue and margins.
In companies organised by business unit, each unit tends to choose its own tools and methods: that is where the data a company owns and does not turn into decisions accumulate, along with the misalignments between departments that slow shared work down.
An example
A chemical group has three business units: paints, adhesives and additives. Each has its own price list, sales force and accounts, and each has adopted a different AI assistant.
