Also known asInformation TechnologyIT department
IT (Information Technology) is the business function that runs information systems: computers, networks, software, data and their security.
The term covers both the discipline and the department in charge of it.
On this site IT almost always appears in relation to other functions: "Marketing cannot operate in a silo from Sales, nor Sales from IT or Customer Service." The reason is that inefficiencies arise in the handovers between departments, and when IT finds out months later about tools adopted on their own by marketing and sales, the result is Shadow AI. For this reason systems integration and Organizational Synchrony between IT, marketing and sales weigh as much as the technology chosen.
An example
At a bank, marketing wants a new campaign tool: IT checks that it connects to the CRM, that data stay protected and that the vendor contract holds up, before the first email goes out.
