DPO (Data Protection Officer)

The DPO (data protection officer) is the person who oversees how an organisation processes personal data and acts as the contact point with the supervisory authority.

The GDPR (the EU General Data Protection Regulation) makes the role mandatory for public bodies and for companies that process data on a large scale or special categories of data, such as health data (arts. 37-39). The DPO advises and checks: decisions on processing stay with the company. That is why, when AI enters processes, the DPO is the person with whom a company settles which data may reach which tools.

An example

A regional bank wants an AI assistant to answer customer requests. Before switching it on, the DPO checks which personal data the tool receives, where the vendor stores them and which processing agreement protects them.
