Federico Faggin (Vicenza, 1941) is an Italian-born American physicist, inventor and entrepreneur.
He designed the first commercial microprocessor, the Intel 4004 of 1971: an entire processor (the computing brain of a computer) on a single chip.
Personal computers, phones and every device that processes data today descend from that chip. Faggin then founded Zilog, maker of the Z80 processor, and Synaptics, the company that brought the touchpad to laptops and paved the way for touch screens. In recent years he has devoted himself to the study of consciousness.
