Giovanni Degli Antoni

Giovanni Degli Antoni (Piacenza, 1935 - Segrate, 2016), known as Gianni, was an Italian computer scientist, one of the fathers of university computing in Italy.

He graduated in Physics in Milan in 1960 and trained in particle research under Giuseppe Occhialini.

At the University of Milan he built the computing school step by step:

  • in 1969 the Electronics and Cybernetics Group (cybernetics being the science of control and communication in machines and living beings), which became the Institute of Cybernetics in 1977;
  • in 1986 the Department of Information Science, which he directed until 1991;
  • later the Crema campus, which became the Department of Information Technology.

He also helped found CINI, the Italian national inter-university consortium for computer science, and founded the university's television centre.
