Luciano Gallino (Turin, 1927 - 2015) was an Italian sociologist, among the most authoritative of the post-war period.
He studied work, the economy and above all the social and cultural consequences of science and technology, including the new telecommunications.
His training began inside a company: in 1956 Adriano Olivetti called him to the Social Relations Studies Office of Olivetti in Ivrea, and from 1960 to 1969 he directed its Sociological Research and Organisation Studies Service. He then moved to the University of Turin, where he taught sociology for decades. This is why his name remains tied to the idea that a technology is judged also by its effects on people and work, not only by its performance.
