The operating system is the base program that runs a computer: it manages memory, files and devices and lets other programs run without dealing with the details of the machine.
Windows, macOS, Linux and Android are the best-known names. Whoever chooses one decides in practice which applications will be available and who can work on the code.
The site's articles meet it in three seasons. In the 1980s operating systems and the BASIC language came on audio cassette in computers such as the Commodore 64. In 1991 Linus Torvalds announced an open operating system from a newsgroup (a discussion forum of the network of the time). Today Enrico Giubertoni tells it from the user's side, having moved to Kubuntu and Ubuntu, two versions of Linux.
An example
A manufacturing company has to replace its shop-floor computers: before choosing the models it decides the operating system, because that determines which management software and which connected machines will work.
