Recentism

Persuasion

Recentism is the tendency to give more weight to the most recent news and events, losing sight of historical context and long-term information.

It differs from attention to current affairs because it measures a fact's importance by its freshness. Psychology knows it as recency bias, a relative of the availability bias described by Tversky and Kahneman: what has just happened is easier to recall, so it seems more important. In digital news it is fed by the continuous flow of updates; in business decisions it leads to reacting to the latest figure instead of reading the trend.

An example

A company changes strategy after one week of weak sales, without comparing it with the same period in previous years.
