SLA (Service Level Agreement)

Revenue and sales

An SLA, short for service level agreement, is a written, measurable commitment on what gets delivered, by when and at what quality.

In marketing it is the agreement between Marketing and Sales: Marketing commits to delivering a given number of qualified leads under a shared definition, Sales commits to contacting them within a set time and reporting what happened to them. Without an SLA each department judges the other by its own yardstick; with one, the lead lost between the two has an owner and a deadline.

An example

A B2B company's SLA states that every quote request from the website gets a call back within four working hours, and that the salesperson records the outcome in the CRM within a week. In the first month the company finds out how many requests were going unanswered, a number nobody had ever seen before.
