Algorithm economy

Data and infrastructure

The algorithm economy is the economic phase in which competitive advantage comes from how algorithms process data to guide decisions, more than from owning the data itself.

The phrase spread from 2015 through the research firm Gartner, which presented it as the step after the big data economy. Raw data gains value when a system turns it into a choice that matters to the customer: a recommendation, a price, a message at the right moment. This is where the question of algorithm governance begins.

An example

Two retail chains hold the same sales data; the winner is the one whose algorithm offers each customer the product about to run out in their pantry.
