Digital Markets Act (DMA)

Rules, risk and compliance

The Digital Markets Act (DMA, Regulation (EU) 2022/1925) is the European Union regulation that aims to make digital markets fairer and more contestable: it places specific obligations on the large online platforms designated as «gatekeepers», to prevent anti-competitive practices.

It entered into force in November 2022 and has applied since 2 May 2023. In September 2023 the European Commission designated the first six gatekeepers, Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta and Microsoft, joined by Booking in 2024; since 6 March 2024 they must comply with its obligations. Among them: allowing users to uninstall pre-installed apps and to choose their default search engine and browser, not favouring their own services in results, letting users take their data with them and letting businesses access the data they generate on the platform. For a European company it means fairer conditions on the platforms it depends on to sell.
