Also known aspersonal homepages
A personal homepage was the website a person built on their own, in the 1990s, to present themselves online: who they were, their passions, photos, links to friends' sites.
It was almost always hosted on free web space services such as GeoCities, Xoom, Digiland or Interfree, hand-written in HTML (the language used to describe web pages), with visitor counters and guestbooks.
It is an early form of user-generated content and the starting point of personal branding (managing one's professional image) online: blogs and social profiles have inherited its function.
An example
In 1998 an economics student publishes a page with her CV, photos from a trip and a list of useful links: it is her personal homepage, hosted for free on GeoCities.
