Channels and tools
A widget is a small self-contained application that sits inside a web page, or on a phone screen, to offer one specific function without leaving the page.
It is installed with a few lines of code, and its content updates itself because it comes from an outside service. The word, of uncertain origin, meant any small gadget in English; in software it arrived with graphical interfaces and spread in the mid-2000s, when blogs and personal pages filled up with boxes taken from other sites. It is one of the building blocks of Web 2.0: the content of one service lives inside the pages of another.
