How to build brand equity in a digital market? Consumer perception of a brand decides more than ever. Brand equity is the added value that a brand gives to a product or service, and it is the lifeblood of every successful company.

The real question is how to build it and, above all, how to optimise it in the digital ecosystem.

In my podcast Digital Marketing Mentality I explored how to turn a brand into a dynamic platform, capable of answering the needs of the target customer with effectiveness and coherence. This is a central strategy for brand equity management, well beyond an exercise in style. Here are five key steps.

Brand equity: meaning and definition

Before the operational strategies, let us clarify what brand equity means.

Brand equity is the value of a brand based on the overall perception and experience of the consumer: the notoriety of the name together with the assets (and liabilities) linked to the brand that add value to the product or service offered, or subtract it. Strong brand equity produces greater customer loyalty, lower price sensitivity, credibility and the capacity to attract new customers.

It is the result of a coherent corporate brand identity and of promises kept over time. The relation between brand identity and brand equity is direct: a clear and strong identity is the foundation on which equity is built.

Turn your brand into a platform: your target asks for it

Today the target customer looks for an integrated, fluid and personalised customer experience, beyond the single product or service. And the request is explicit: the customer wants your brand to become a platform.

What does this mean? A brand as a platform is a single point of reference that brings together information, services, support and interactions in a coherent and accessible way. Your target wants immediate answers, relevant content at the right moment and the sensation that the brand understands its needs and anticipates them.

When a brand operates as a platform, it orchestrates every point of contact, digital and physical, to reinforce perceived value continuously. Digital channels (e-commerce, social media, chat, content marketing) supply the instruments; the platform strategy makes them effective. The task moves from promotion to an ecosystem that supports the customer, increases brand recall (the capacity of the customer to remember the brand) and feeds a relation of deep trust.

This is the core of modern brand equity management: answering this need for centralisation and coherence is the first move to maximise your brand equity. A strategic approach to brand equity modelling has to consider the platform transformation as a competitive lever.

Brand equity strategy: the five steps

Here are the five fundamental steps, reconsidered in the light of the platform and of emerging technologies.

1. Analyse the real needs of the target customer to build platform value

The first and indispensable step of a brand equity strategy is a deep understanding of your target customer. This step is the product of a cultural and organisational change, and it is the base of a solid corporate brand identity.

I have often asked myself (and verified it in my consulting work) how important it is to start from one question: “what does our target really need in terms of an overall, integrated experience?” The analysis has to identify primary needs, and also the expectations of accessibility, personalisation and support that a platform can offer.

Once the needs are identified, the second move is to understand on which channels the target expects to interact with the platform and which functions it considers indispensable.

With this understanding you can design a platform that the customer perceives as truly useful, and you start to build the positive perception at the base of brand equity.

2. Coordinate all digital and physical channels: the base of a coherent brand identity

With the needs and expectations of the target customer mapped, the next challenge is to guarantee coherent communication and experience everywhere.

The brand identity of the platform has to be unique and recognisable, whether the customer interacts through an app, the website, social media or a physical point of contact.

Every interaction has to be perceived as part of one intelligent ecosystem. Digital offers countless points of access, and orchestrating them under one unifying vision is decisive.

This coherence is vital to improve brand recall (remembering your platform as the solution) and to build solid brand equity. Fragmentation works in the opposite direction: it reduces the utility of the platform and erodes trust. Effective brand equity modelling treats omnichannel integration as a multiplier of value.

3. Trust and loyalty are the pillars of your brand equity

Inside a platform ecosystem, customer service becomes even more decisive, because poor service feeds customer churn (the share of customers who leave in a period). Customer service is an integrated function of the platform that guarantees continuous and qualified support. Efficient, rapid and personalised customer service, easy to reach from every point of the platform, is a pillar of trust and loyalty.

This reinforces positive perception strongly, contributes directly to brand equity management and consolidates the corporate brand identity. The capacity of the platform to offer proactive assistance that resolves problems is a key differentiator with a positive effect on brand equity.

4. Use artificial intelligence for one-to-one interaction and a stronger value proposition

To turn your brand into a platform that offers unique value, artificial intelligence (AI) is an indispensable instrument.

AI makes highly personalised one-to-one interaction possible (a dialogue with the single customer instead of the mass), and it raises the product value proposition to a level that was unthinkable before. Consider advanced chatbots that answer FAQs and also guide the user along personalised paths inside the platform, anticipate needs through the analysis of behavioural data, or configure tailored offers in real time.

AI can power recommendation engines that suggest products, services or content specific to that single target customer, which makes the experience on the platform unique and highly relevant.

This hyper-personalisation, made possible by AI, raises brand perception, improves the brand recall associated with positive experiences and builds stronger brand equity. The integration of AI in the platform is a decisive part of modern brand equity modelling, because it demonstrates an innovative and customer-centric brand identity.

5. Go beyond the traditional borders of the brand: platform alliances

A successful brand platform often looks beyond its own borders. Working on the limits, federating different touchpoints and services, including third-party ones, and transforming competition into collaboration can enrich the offer of the platform considerably and, as a consequence, its brand equity.

Becoming an open and interconnected platform, for example by integrating complementary services of strategic partners, allows you to intercept the changing needs of the target customer and remain relevant.

These strategic alliances amplify the reach of the platform, add functions and increase its perceived value. The synergy between your own brand identity and brand equity and those of your partners can create an ecosystem that is even more powerful and attractive.

Marketing as the architect of the brand equity platform

The role of marketing evolves: from promoter to architect of the brand platform, with the final objective of maximising brand equity. Modern marketing orchestrates all the elements of the platform, from user experience to AI integration, from the coherence of the corporate brand identity to the management of partnerships, and ensures that every interaction reinforces the bond of trust with the target customer.

The objective is an ecosystem in which the consumer feels understood, supported and valued, with better brand recall and greater overall value of the brand.

The digital platform and AI as keys to successful brand equity

The most advanced companies are already moving in this direction: turning the brand into an intelligent platform powered by AI is now indispensable to build and consolidate strong brand equity.

Companies have to answer the requests of the target customer for integrated experiences, implement focused digital strategies that use AI for one-to-one interaction, and give value to every point of contact. Understanding what brand equity means and applying brand equity management through a careful definition of the brand identity (and of the wider corporate brand identity), with brand equity modelling approaches that include AI, is fundamental.

The final objective is better brand recall and a deep connection between brand identity and brand equity, with a superior value proposition.
