Roadmap

A roadmap is the plan that sequences over time the milestones needed to reach a goal: what gets done, in which order, by when and with which priorities.

It is used for products, transformation projects and strategies.

A roadmap differs from a task list because it states the dependencies, meaning which milestone must close before the next one can start, and because it makes priority choices visible. This is why it also serves to communicate: it shows top management and teams where the company is heading and makes the cost of a delay measurable. A good roadmap is updated at every milestone, because what you learn changes the path.

An example

A chemical company wants to bring artificial intelligence into customer service. The roadmap sets the milestones: first the AI policy and staff training, then a pilot on a single product line, finally the rollout to the others if the pilot meets the agreed targets.
