YouTube

Subject areaChannels and tools

YouTube is the video sharing platform founded in February 2005 by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, three former PayPal employees; the first video, «Me at the zoo», was uploaded by Karim in April of the same year.

Google bought it in 2006.

For a company it is both a communication channel and a search engine: people look there for tutorials, reviews and comparisons before buying. It follows that a useful video, with a title that answers a real question, keeps bringing contacts for years, while a social post fades within hours.

An example

A machine tool manufacturer publishes short videos showing how to change a tool. Customers' technicians find them by searching for the problem, and the support department receives fewer calls.
