Content governance

Process and organisation

Content governance is the set of roles, processes and rules through which an organisation decides who creates, approves, updates and retires content.

It ensures consistency of tone and quality, prevents duplicate or outdated pages, and keeps the site's structure intact over time even when people change. It is part of content strategy, a discipline made known by Kristina Halvorson with the book Content Strategy for the Web (2009).

An example

Every page has an owner and a review date; when the date comes, it is updated or retired with a redirect.
