JSON-LD

JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data, a machine-readable text format for linking data together) is the format a web page uses to describe in a structured way who it is and what it is about: a company, a product, an article, an event.

The code sits in a block invisible to the reader and uses the schema.org vocabulary, launched jointly by Google, Bing, Yahoo! and Yandex in 2011. The W3C (the body that sets web standards) published it as a recommendation in 2014; Manu Sporny is among its authors.

It matters for marketing because it is how search engines and artificial intelligence read a site without having to interpret it: whoever describes their data precisely is understood, and cited, better than others.

An example

A chemical company adds a JSON-LD block to each product page with the name, safety data sheet and production site. When a buyer asks an AI assistant who makes that additive in Europe, the answer names the company.
