It is a subset of artificial intelligence: artificial intelligence is the ambition of making machines display human cognitive faculties, machine learning is the most widely travelled road towards it. Where traditional programming asks for precise rules for every action, here the system is handed large volumes of data and algorithms that find the regularities inside them.
An example
A retail chain gives the system three years of till receipts, and the system isolates micro-segments nobody had ever defined: those who buy only during the sales, those who come back every six weeks, those who stopped after the rebranding. The rule «customer who returns every six weeks» was written by the system reading the data, and far sharper offers follow from it.
