Also known asdata protection
Privacy is a person's right to decide who collects their personal data, for what purpose, for how long and with whom it is shared.
In business language the word also refers to the set of rules and practices an organisation uses to protect that data: privacy notices, consents, security measures.
In the European Union the framework is the GDPR, the General Data Protection Regulation of 2016, applied since 2018: it requires a legal basis for every processing activity, such as consent, and in many cases the appointment of a DPO (Data Protection Officer). Marketing meets it constantly, in cookies, profiling and tracking. With artificial intelligence the risk grows, because data uploaded to an external tool leaves the company's control: this is why privacy becomes a condition of the project, and customer trust depends on it.
An example
A mechanical components company that wants to use artificial intelligence to analyse customer emails first checks the legal basis for the processing, informs its customers and removes from the texts the personal data the analysis does not need.
