Channels and tools
Second Life is an online virtual world launched in 2003 by the American company Linden Lab, founded by Philip Rosedale, and one of the first mass examples of a metaverse.
Each user enters with an avatar, can buy land and build with an in-world currency, the Linden dollar, and moves from place to place by teleport. Rosedale has said he was inspired by the metaverse of Snow Crash. Between 2006 and 2008, in the Web 2.0 years, companies, universities, embassies and political parties opened virtual offices there to try out a new kind of presence; then attention moved to social networks. Outside gaming, however, this kind of experience has not yet managed to become a stable part of companies' marketing processes.
An example
In 2007 the Italian party Italia dei Valori bought an island in Second Life, and Antonio Di Pietro held a press conference there.
