Virtual reality

Channels and tools

Virtual reality (VR) is the technology that immerses the user in an entirely digital environment, replacing the real world: usually with a headset that covers the eyes and follows head movements, sometimes with controllers or gloves for touching and moving objects.

Its forerunners are Morton Heilig's Sensorama (1962) and Ivan Sutherland's first headset (1968); the phrase ‘virtual reality’ was popularised in the 1980s by the American Jaron Lanier. Science fiction imagined it before the technology did, from William Gibson's cyberspace in Neuromancer (1984) to the metaverse of Snow Crash (1992). After the consumer headsets of the 2010s it is used in gaming, training, design and in selling what cannot be seen yet, such as a house still to be built.

An example

An estate agency lets buyers tour, room by room and through a headset, a flat still under construction, furnished with the pieces the customer has chosen.
