Web 3.0 is the phase of the World Wide Web that follows Web 2.0 and is still taking shape.
The phrase has two roots. The first is Tim Berners-Lee's semantic web, where data are labelled so that machines understand their meaning. The second is the Web3 described in 2014 by the Briton Gavin Wood, co-founder of Ethereum: a decentralised web, built on blockchain, where users own their data and their digital goods without going through intermediaries such as the big platforms or the banks. To these are added artificial intelligence, which interprets data and personalises the experience, and ubiquitous access through connected objects (the Internet of Things) and immersive reality. Where Web 2.0 gave users a voice, Web 3.0 promises to give them ownership too.
An example
A search engine that answers the question instead of listing pages, because structured data tell it what they mean; a concert ticket recorded on a blockchain, which can be resold without going through the seller's website.
