Glossary

Algorithmic bias

Rules, risk and compliance

Algorithmic bias is the set of preconceptions built into an algorithm.

These are not simple technical errors: the algorithm is designed by human beings and trained on data produced by human beings, and it inherits their prejudices. The result is answers that are systematically distorted against some groups.

An example

If a search for «woman» returns almost only images of white Caucasian women, the algorithm has identified the concept of woman with one of its groups alone. In cosmetics the same mechanism produces less accurate diagnoses on dark or mature skin.
