AI governance paralysis

Artificial intelligence

AI governance paralysis is the condition of a company that has adopted artificial intelligence without guidance and cannot show its board that the adoption is a strategic asset rather than a hidden liability.

It is a leadership weakness more than a technical problem: the gap between ambition and action where competitive advantage is lost. It differs from AI decision paralysis, which blocks before adoption: here adoption has already happened, often as shadow AI, and nobody is accountable for it. The European AI Act and the ISO/IEC 42001 standard make the problem concrete, because they require knowing which systems run in the company and who controls them. The first step out is to measure the real starting point.

An example

The board asks how many AI tools the company uses and with what data, and nobody can answer.
