The AI Act is Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 on artificial intelligence, in force since 1 August 2024 and applying in stages.

In Enrico Giubertoni's articles the order in which the duties land counts for more than the date of entry into force: Article 50 on the transparency of generated content already hits the company that publishes such content, while the duties that would oblige it to know which systems run inside its own walls were moved to 2 December 2027 by Regulation (EU) 2026/1744. Liability arrives first, visibility sixteen months later. It is the world's first comprehensive law on artificial intelligence, and its logic is risk: it bans practices of unacceptable risk, such as social scoring of citizens and manipulation that exploits people's vulnerabilities (bans in force since 2 February 2025); it places strict duties on high-risk systems, such as those used to select staff or grant credit; it requires transparency from limited-risk systems, such as chatbots and generated content; it leaves the rest free. Since 2 August 2025 the duties for general-purpose AI models, those behind generative assistants, have applied. Like the GDPR, it applies to anyone offering systems on the European market, wherever they are based.
