Channels and tools
Smart retail is the application of intelligent technology to the point of sale to make it more efficient and more personal: sensors and connected objects (the Internet of Things), artificial intelligence, beacons (small transmitters that talk to the customer's phone), augmented reality and data analysis.
Shelves that report stock, interactive fitting rooms, self-checkouts, footfall analysis to cut waiting times. The difference with New Retail: smart retail works on the shop and can be adopted one piece at a time even by a small retailer, while New Retail rethinks the whole business model around data. The best-known case is Amazon Go, the till-less shop opened in Seattle in 2018.
An example
A fitting room with an interactive mirror that suggests matching items and brings the right size without the customer stepping out.
