AI Overview is the Google feature that shows, at the top of the search results, a summary answer written by artificial intelligence, with links to the sources used.
Born as an experiment in 2023 under the name Search Generative Experience, it was launched in the United States in May 2024 and then extended to other countries. It changes the deal search used to rest on: fewer clicks to websites for simple questions, more value for in-depth and authoritative content, which is more likely to be cited as a source. It is the ground of generative engine optimisation.
